Organize My Life

If you haven’t see my Youtube video regarding my intervention, you should Check It Out.

In summary, I felt it was necessary to have an intervention with myself.

How do I put this, I’ve been kind of dropping the ball on this whole adulthood thing.

I hear so often that people want to go back to being a kid: “Oh the good ol’ days”, they say.

Not me. I wasn’t really into the whole childhood thing; I felt like it was very stressful and I lacked a lot of control. I couldn’t wait to grow up and be able to have a handle on things. However, I did have one thing in common with a bunch of kids, I wanted to be able to eat ice cream, chocolate and pizza on a constant basis, which was a leading drive in my desire to be an adult.

Oh kids. So imaginative, so irrational.

Except, I actually did grow up and eat like a kid. Most days, I’m an unsupervised 5 year old in the body of an adult.

And, spoiler alert: it is NOT going well.

Hence the whole self intervention thing.

So I am uncovering the steps to, in a nutshell, get it together.

Step 1 is Organizing My Life.

Wow. What a loaded statement. Organize my life. My entire life.

But I guess it’s an important step that would make sense in trying to change everyday, habitual behaviors. I mean, this isn’t like I am trying to break a 1 year habit. My current lifestyle has been in the making for over 3 decades. That can be a lot of a pressure on a gal. Hence, steps. Not leaps or jumps.

Of course there are a number of ways to organize my life and, as this isn’t my first time at the organization rodeo, I have tried most of these and, depending upon where I am in my life, any one of them have worked. What I need to figure out is what will work for me RIGHT NOW and, ideally, long term.

There are a few different options I can choose from:

Physical Organizer

Phone (Outlook, ical, etc.)

Wall Calendar/Dry Erase Board

My first go-to is a physical organizer and there are a lot of different options to choose from. Organizers have really made a comeback as of late. They come in so many different colors, formats and types. They also have so many cool accessories, stickers and whatnot.

Below is an example of the planner I bought:

Like colorful, organization stickers:

And other accessories to keep everything tidy, neat and…well…organized.

I love, love, love, seriously: love, this type of organization tool. It is my absolute favorite, however, I do struggle to keep up with it. But it is so pretty, so I think I want to try again

My default is always the calendar on my phone. The beauty of my phone is that it is synced to my email calendars and my work calendar. So everything is in one place. This is probably the most functional type of organization for me and the most boring. Mostly because there aren’t stickers involved.

Lastly, there is a tool that works for so many which is a wall calendar or dry erase calendar. I have both. I use neither. But hey, a lot of people have great success with them.

Here’s the plan: I am going to focus my organization energies on using the physical organizer and see what progress I make.

How do you stay organized? What is your go-to? Are you actually consistent?

Great tips! I’m an organizer too… but I could stand to be a little better at organizing my house. My kids and job tend to take priority. 🙂

I would imagine! I have to get my organizing down before I bring any children into the world or who knows what we happen!

An organizer is probably a good idea. I could use some help here probably. I just jot things down on a little calendar right now. I need to step it up a notch!

I was thinking I had only made the switch from paper to digital when the iPhone came into our lives. But, I just remembered that I had gone digital even before that…with a Pocket PC device that I physically had to sync with my computer every day! Blast from the past!

I’m with you on a physical organization tool. Something about writing it down pen-to-paper style makes it more “real” for me. Thanks for sharing!

I love my app on my phone that I can access from my computer as well. It is called Cozi. I also keep my grocery list and other lists that I use in it. I use it all the time! I love the idea of paper planners, but I never keep them up either 🙁 I think finding what works for you is the key! Good luck on starting this journey!

If it was up to me, I would get a new planner every week. That may be part of the problem…!

I actually use my Google calendar and Google Keep to remind myself of things. I also have a personal planner that I recently started using for my larger goals. That’s still a work in progress though, haha.

It’s been tough, because I love paper, but I’ve forced myself to find and use electronic organization tools. It takes some getting used to, but I love that I always have my calendar, notes, etc. with me. Good luck!

This has been where my struggle is – I love having everything at my fingertips and, at the same time, I struggle not having something concrete like a planner!

I totally agree with you! I love being an adult but sometimes it can be fun. I spent a lot of money on a planner this year and NEVER use it 🙁 I am so much better with putting things in my phone calendar and forgetting about them until I get a reminder.

Ugh I totally agree – story of my life! I always ignore my reminders on my phone accidentally – I think a big part of my organization issues are user error. haha

I think a great tip for organizing is minimizing! Start with fewer things, and you’ll have fewer things to organize. The book, “The Miracle Morning” has a great strategy for starting each morning with success. It’s awesome. Just a personal recommendation.

I couldn’t agree more! I think that especially with the materialistic society we live in, minimizing, both physically and overall, is so important. I will definitely have to take a look at this book – I love a good self-help read! Thanks for sharing Samantha!
