How I Met My Fur-Soulmate – Celebrating Gotcha Day!

Raising a Pup

HAVING IT TOGETHER

I grew up with pets and I always wanted a cat or dog as an adult, but I wanted to wait until I really had it together. What does “having it together” look like? Excelling financially, a house with a yard, a husband, some kids.

As time has gone by, I have realized that “having it together” doesn’t mean that everything is perfect and it looks different for each individual. That being said, as cliché as it sounds, life is about the journey, not the destination. So by the time you think you have everything together, something will happen, for better or for worse, that shakes your foundation and forces you to develop a new normal. A new version of “having it together”.

OKAY, I DEFINITELY WANT A DOG, NOW WHAT?

In the summer of 2016, I decided that I wanted to adopt a dog. This was a huge decision for me; I researched everything I would ever need to know about dogs: what breeds would be right for me, what size dog, what age range. While some people decide to adopt an animal on a whim, I only felt comfortable doing so if I was completely sure it was the right decision for me.

I had met a handful of dogs (not for coffee or anything, just at adoption events) who all were getting adopted so quickly, which is so awesome, but very frustrating when you keep getting attached to the idea of a specific animal. Then at the end of September 2016, I went to a weekly adoption event for a local rescue to follow up on the status of my application.

MEETING ADDY.

While standing and speaking to one of my closest friends who came with me, there was a little dog sitting on a children’s folding chair. I recognized the dog from the website of the rescue and pointed this out to my friend. Before he could ask me why I was able to point out specific dogs like they were celebrities, this little dog slowly stepped down off of the chair, walked over to me and proceeded to stand on their hind legs, leaning on me as if requesting to be picked up.

I gave into this request, of course, and picked up this 8-pound Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier with the softest coat, the widest eyes and the most adorable underbite. My heart was immediately stolen; I was beyond smitten with this petite little sweetie.

AND THAT WAS ALL IT TOOK…

October 1st, I took the leap and adopted a rescue, the sweet angel who walked right up to me and cuddled in my arms – Adeline, or more commonly referred to as ADDY.

Addy quickly became 2 things:

  • The absolute love of my life.
  • The reason I am now a Crazy Dog Mom.

The rescue didn’t know a bunch about where Addy came from. What we did know was that she was from close by and was surrendered by someone who routinely surrenders animals. While I am not someone who would surrender an animal easily (if ever) and, therefore, don’t really understand that thought process, I kept waiting for Addy to do something that would make me say “Ohhh, maybe THIS was the reason it was just too difficult for her previous owners, I get it”.

ONE YEAR LATER:

It has now be over a year since I adopted Addy and I still have no idea who could have parted ways with this sweet angel. I know that so many people think their animals are perfect – but seriously, my dog is as close as a pup can come to it. Well behaved, cuddly, quiet, cute, sweet…and a bunch of other positive adjectives.

Addy has helped me in so many ways, from easing a great deal of depression and anxiety to challenging me to be a little more self-less and a lot more responsible. All of that along with this insane unconditional love and joy that she offers easily makes it clear that adopting a dog was the best decision I have ever made.

What makes Addy’s story even cooler, is knowing that she totally chose me on the day I met her. She has really enriched my life and I honestly cannot figure out how I lived without her. As crazy as I may sound, I never have any hesitation in saying that Addy is absolutely, 100%, my fur-soulmate.

Happy Gotcha Day Addy!

Beautiful story! I am OBSESSED with dogs. Sadly I travel too much to have one on my own, but hope to change that in the future. And Addy is SO cute…I love her little underbite lol. She needs an Instagram for sure!

I understand completely! I love the fact that you know your schedule is too crazy for a dog – one of my biggest pet peeves in life is when people don’t have the time for an animal and figure that out after the fact. I am excited for your future pup – they will be very lucky!

Both my dogs are rescues. I don’t believe in buying from breeders. Your dog is super cute.

Please know there will absolutely be a post about that! There are so many pups in need of homes, I think it is so sad when people don’t choose the adoption path. Plus – rescues always have the best stories. lol

Aw! So sweet! My kids grew up with dogs–and animals–and they have not waited to get their own as adults either. They add so much joy (and work!) to our lives! 🙂

Thanks! I always made fun of people who bought clothes for their dogs. And here I am, essentially keeping pet supply stores in business.

She is such a cutie! My husband and I decided to adopt a dog a few years ago, so we went to an adoption event. There was an enclosure with two German Shepherd mixes; they were the most adorable puppies! They were the last two of their litter, and they were sisters. I couldn’t split up the sisters! And that’s how we got two dogs one day.

Stacey, this just made my heart melt. I love that you didn’t split them up, they are probably so grateful to you for that in their little pup hearts!

Addy is totes adorbs! I adopted my dog after looking and wanting for about two months. He was so sad and shy when I brought him home. He was afraid of going through doors. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry. But it’s been about three years now and he pretty much runs this place. I would have been completely lost if I hadn’t adopted my dog. Thanks for sharing your story.
